Fish and Wildlife Service (FWS) recently proposed reintroducing California Condors in the Pacific Northwest. One management tool used by FWS is reintroduction of an endangered species into its former range. In 1806, Lewis and Clark saw condors near the Columbia River, which makes up much of the Washington-Oregon border.

The focus on Malheur is and was appropriate, but we should not lose sight of the significance of the entire National Wildlife Refuge System. The combination is potent.

My fiance and I drove nearly two hours to the Jasper-Pulaski Fish and Wildlife Area in rural Indiana to watch them come in for the evening. I think it’s because it brings me back to my first big birding trip, to southeast Arizona, where we had tantalizing views of leaves rustling where the becards had nested but nested no more.
